It was awesome! Where the first movie surprised me this one blew me away! The story was deeper, the enemies sinister, and of course Sunset Shimmers redemption was everything I wanted! And the cameos! OMG the number of character they managed to give scenes! My favorite has to be Maud's scene where she interrupts twilight and sunset to get boulder a snack, priceless! The movie also did a great job of handling the problems that I thought would keep a sequel from being possible, such as making the portal work at any time using the two way book.
Another great improvement was the problems lasted far longer this time. In the first movie many complained that the problems got fixed to quickly, but in this one all the problems do a great job of building over time in a way that feels so much more like the show.
And of course the audience went wild when DJ PON3 was the one to save the day, showing off her ussual improbable capabilities. And the villains are very creative. I initially thought they would be an already existing form of bady but the creators went the extra distance, making a whole new species of evil creatures both in human form and in their horse like siren form. They had such an eirie feel to them that you couldn't help fearing for the heros.
Of course as with the first movie the big selling point was the music. Where the first had amazing music the second was in a whole different ball park. My favorite songs were the ones involving the sirens, their chilling melodies mixing with the upbeat Equestria girls music in an amazing display. I'm definitely getting the soundtrack, and for that matter the movie because its well worth it.
All this said I did have one or two issues, minor of course but for every glowing review there has to be an issue or two, no movies perfect. I was a bit confused with how much spike acted like a dog. I know thats a little odd sounding since in that world he IS a dog, but in the first movie he acted like his normal self. For some reason most of his scenes featured him playing with dog toys or eating dog treats, acting very much like a common dog rather then the intelligent dragon-turned-dog that he is. Another odd thing that was probably only bugged me was the singing voices. since this was a music centered movie pretty much every character was singing, but not all of the singer's voices sounded like the actor's voices. The one that stuck out the most to me was Trixie as her singing voice sounded nothing like her, making in painfully obvious that it wasn't the same voice actor. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal but the creators of MLP are usually so good at matching voices that I find it strange how many didn't match in this.
Despite my few minor complaints this was a great movie. I would definitely recommend anyone who enjoys MLP to watch it, even if you didn't like the first movie. This was my first time getting to be in a group of bronies and pegasisters this size and I really enjoyed myself. I even met a fellow deviant, :iconsonicarchiefan45: who you should check out!

PS: If you stayed till the very end you might have seen a surprising character and her dog leaving this open for a third installment, I cant wait! If you didn't stay till the end then heres a hint (if my description didn't ALREADY give it away): pinkie pie mentions this in passing in the first movie, someone that makes perfect sense existing in this parallel world but for some reason never appeared before.
